How We Vet Every Contractor in the Directory

We take a clear stance on who gets listed: only active businesses with verifiable ratings, real contact information, and a track record of generator installation work. Here is exactly how we source, filter, and maintain the data behind every listing.

Where Our Data Comes From

Every contractor in FindGeneratorPros was sourced from the Google Places API — the same underlying data that powers Google Maps. This means each listing corresponds to a real business that has claimed a Google Business Profile, collected verified customer reviews, and maintained an active presence on Google's platform.

We queried the Google Places API specifically for businesses matching generator installation, electrical contractors, and generator service in each of our ten target cities. Each result was pulled with its full data payload: business name, address, phone number, website, rating, review count, and operational status. No entries were manually invented, scraped from review sites, or sourced from purchased contact lists.

Our Listing Criteria (All Must Be Met)

Active Google Places listing

The business must have an active, unclaimed or claimed Google Business Profile in one of our ten markets. Businesses marked as "permanently closed" or "temporarily closed" are excluded at the time of data collection.

Minimum 4.0 Google rating

We set a floor of 4.0 stars to filter out contractors with documented quality issues. The average rating in our directory is 4.3 stars. Businesses below 4.0 at the time of our data pull are not included, regardless of how many reviews they have.

Minimum 5 verified reviews

A single 5-star rating from one customer tells us nothing. We require at least 5 reviews on Google before a business is included, which provides a statistically meaningful baseline and reduces the chance of gaming the rating with a handful of submissions.

Verifiable phone number and service area

Every contractor in the directory has a phone number that was active and assigned to that business at the time of data collection. We do not include listings with missing, disconnected, or shared call-center numbers that cannot be tied to a specific local contractor.

Generator installation as a listed service

The business must list generator installation, whole-home generator service, or electrical contractor work as a primary or stated service. General handymen, appliance repair shops, or businesses that appeared in results only due to keyword overlap are excluded during our review pass.

What We Do Not Independently Verify

We want to be transparent about the limits of our vetting. FindGeneratorPros is a directory that aggregates publicly available data. We are not a licensing board and we do not conduct direct background investigations on individual contractors.

  • — We do not independently verify individual state contractor licenses. We rely on the contractor's self-reported licensing status and their Google Business Profile data.
  • — We do not verify current insurance certificates. Always ask the contractor for proof of general liability insurance and workers' compensation before any work begins.
  • — We do not conduct criminal background checks on business owners or employees.
  • — We do not verify that ratings shown are free from manipulation. We use Google's published rating and review count, which is subject to Google's own review policies.
  • — Listing in this directory is not an endorsement of any contractor's work quality, pricing, or business practices.

What You Should Always Do Before Hiring

The directory gives you a verified starting point. But a generator installation is a significant investment — typically $5,000–$15,000 — and you should take a few additional steps before signing any contract:

01

Ask for their state electrical contractor license number and verify it on your state's licensing board website.

02

Request a certificate of insurance showing general liability and workers' compensation, dated within the last 12 months.

03

Get at least 3 quotes. Generator installation pricing varies significantly by contractor, even for identical scopes of work.

04

Ask specifically who will pull the permit. A licensed contractor should pull all electrical and gas permits themselves.

05

Check that the quote includes the automatic transfer switch, concrete pad, and any gas line work — not just the generator unit.

06

Confirm the contractor is an authorized dealer if you want full manufacturer warranty coverage (especially for Generac and Kohler).
